Oscar Isaac to Star Opposite Elizabeth Olsen in Dark Thriller THERESE RAQUIN

oscar-isaac-therese-raquin

Oscar Isaac has landed one of the lead roles in the adaptation of Emile Zola’s novel Therese Raquin. The dark thriller stars Elizabeth Olsen as a young woman in 1867 Paris whose aunt, Madame Raquin, is forcing her into an arranged marriage with her rich, but sickly, first cousin (Tom Felton). As Therese soon becomes obsessed with Laurent, a friend of her husband’s, a devastating affair ensues with a very heavy price. Deadline reports that Isaac will take on the role of Laurent, and while we previously had Glenn Close attached to play Olsen’s aunt, Deadline’s report now says that Jessica Lange has the role.

Isaac had a nice supporting role in last year’s Drive and he appears in the upcoming reboot The Bourne Legacy. The talented actor is currently filming Joel and Ethan Coen’s folk music drama Inside Llewyn Davis, and he make a nice addition to the promising Therese Raquin cast. Though Close was a nice fit, Lange does “overbearing motherly figure” like nobody’s business so I have no qualms with the switch.

Is This a Poster for THE WOLVERINE?

the-wolverine-poster-slice

Earlier today we got a good look at Hugh Jackman on the set of Les Miserables doing his best hobo impression, but now a poster has surfaced that’s purported to be from his upcoming return to badassery. This poster for The Wolverine teases the Japan setting, and definitely looks like it could be official, but we’ve received no word from 20th Century Fox either way. It’s possible that this is simply production artwork that someone took a picture of, or it could be entirely fanmade. Whatever the case, it’s pretty cool and definitely worth a gander.

Hit the jump to take a look at the poster. Under the direction of James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma), filming on The Wolverine is set to get underway later this year once Jackman wraps Les Miserables. The Wolverine opens on July 26th, 2013

Concept Art from Failed WILLOW Animated Series

willow-animated-series-slice

The 1988 Lucasfilm fantasy Willow apparently had aspirations for the small screen as an animated series. We’ll blame the lackluster box office for the failure of the project, but we can still take a look at some concept art that was drafted along the way. Directed by Ron Howard and written by George Lucas, the feature film followed the dwarf-like character Willow (Warwick Davis), barbarian Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and warrior princess Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) as they attempted to protect an infant from the diabolical plans of an evil queen (Jean Marsh). It’s a classic swords-and-sorcery flick with some great moments; it even managed to garner two Academy Award nominations (for Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects). While it’s a shame that I can’t relive the childhood memories of watching an animated Willow on Saturday mornings, these images provide a nice glimpse of what could have been. Hit the jump to check them out.

The following examples of Willow the Animated Series concept art come via i09; click over to see more of them there.

Kamala Films Acquires LONE WOLF AND CUB with FAST FIVE Director Justin Lin Attached

justin-lin-lone-wolf-and-cub

Following the smashing commercial and critical success of Fast Five, director Justin Lin has been inundated with a number of potential future projects. He’s currently prepping the untitled sixth entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, but another one of his potential projects just moved a bit closer toward production. Deadline reports that Kamala Films has acquired the film rights to the Japanese manga Lone Wolf and Cub, which Lin has developing since last summer. The highly lauded manga, created by Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima, tells the story of a Shogun’s executioner who sets out to seek revenge with his three-year-old son in tow after he’s disgraced by false accusations from the Yagyu clan. Hit the jump for more.

lone-wolf-and-cub-book-coverKamala has tapped David and Janet Peoples (Blade Runner, Twelve Monkeys) to write the script, with Lin set to direct. I haven’t read Lone Wolf and Cub, but it’s largely considered to be a seminal work. Lin is great with popcorn action fare, but it’ll be interesting to see him take on such a beloved piece of material. Production is still probably quite a ways off, as Lin will be busy with Fast 6 for the next year or so, after which Universal will most likely want to get the ball rolling on Fast 7. Read the synopsis for Lone Wolf and Cub below.

Lone Wolf and Cub chronicles the story of Ogami Itto, the Shogun’s executioner who uses a dotanuki battle sword. Disgraced by false accusations from the Yagyu clan, he is forced to take the path of the assassin. Along with his three-year-old son, Daigoro, they seek revenge on the Yagyu clan and are known as “Lone Wolf and Cub”. [Wikipedia]

Stan Lee Talks About His Cameos in THE AVENGERS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and IRON MAN 3

stan-lee-the-avengers-slice

At 89 years young, Marvel icon Stan Lee is as much of a rock star as ever. Known to millions worldwide for his hand in co-creating many of Marvel’s most recognized characters, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange, among others, Lee is still as enthusiastic and passionate about comics and the characters that inhabit their worlds as he ever was. Now, he is serving as co-executive producer and recurring guest star on Ultimate Spider-Man for Marvel Universe on Disney XD, for which he provides the voice of Stan the Janitor.

While we will post the portion of the interview where he discusses the new animated series closer to its April 1st premiere, we did want to run what he had to say about his cameos in the upcoming movies for The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, which he says are two of his funniest, waiting to get the call for his Iron Man 3 cameo, and how he learns what he’ll be doing in each film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

stan-lee-cameo-amazing-spider-manCollider: How much fan did you have with your cameos in The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man?

Stan Lee: The Avengers cameo that you will see, when that movie opens up, is possibly one of my best. And you know good mine have been, but it is so funny. I can’t tell you what it is ‘cause they’d kill me, but it is funny. So is the Spider-Man one, by the way. They’re deciding to make my cameos a little funnier. They know that’s what brings the audiences in, of course, so they’ve gotta play them up.

Are you already preparing for your cameo for Iron Man 3?

Lee: I haven’t done that cameo yet. It’s almost scary ‘cause they just give me a date. They’ll say, “Stan, come over next Thursday for your cameo,” but they don’t tell me what it is. So, I show up and they say, “Go to wardrobe.” In wardrobe, they say, “We want to get you a white shirt and a green sweater and a black zippered jacket,” and I’ll say, “Don’t bother, I’m wearing one.” And then, they say, “But, you can’t wear yours!,” and they look around and get me the exact same thing, but I’m not allowed to wear my own. And I still don’t know what my role will be. I go on the set and one minute before we’re gonna shoot, the director says, “Okay, Stan, this is what I want you to do.” So, I don’t know what is expected of me, until I get there, but of course, I do it magnificently.

Jonathan Liebesman Talks TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Reboot; Addresses “Alien Race” Comments and Hints at Motion-Capture

Jonathan-Liebesman-TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-interview-slice2

Michael Bay caused quite the hubbub the other day with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans.  He’s producing a new iteration of the lovable characters in the form of a live-action reboot directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans).  Said hubbub was caused when Bay commented that the turtles in the reboot would be “from an alien race.” Fans were perplexed given that the word “mutant” is right in the title of the series, and “alien race” would imply that these new martial arts-inclined turtles weren’t mutated, but are actually extra terrestrial beings.

Steve got the chance to speak with Liebesman at the press junket for Wrath of the Titans earlier today and the director took the time to clear the air about his version of TMNT.  He addressed the “alien race” comments, talked about his approach to the characters, revealed whether they’re thinking CGI or practical effects to bring the turtles to life, and said when he thinks they’ll start filming and where.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Jonathan_Liebesman-TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-movieRegarding the “alien race” comments, Liebesman said the “alien” aspect actually comes straight from the series:

“Look, it’s so funny—if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from.  That is alien ooze.  Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out.  So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology.  I promise you: fans will love it.”

While it still sounds early in the development process, it appears the whole “alien” aspect may simply be referring to the ooze that mutates the turtles. As Liebesman said, they’re still working out the concept so things could definitely change. He stressed that TMNT comics co-creator Kevin Eastman is working alongside him, so they’re not exactly throwing the series mythology out the window:

TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-comic-book“Whatever mythology we’re building on or expanding is coming from that guy, Kevin Eastman’s head, who created the Turtles in the first place.  And so everything will tie in with the mythology; fans will be extremely excited with what we’re coming up with.  A lot of it is stuff he’s wanted to do for a long time, but just hasn’t had the opportunity because now we have the budget and things on this film to expand it in the right way.  And so, I’m happy that everyone is extremely passionate, and they will not be disappointed.  It’s all coming from the best possible place for this franchise.”

When asked if the turtles would be practical or CGI, Liebesman hinted that they may be done similar to another recent visual effects-laden project:

“All I’ll say is that I love how they did [The Rise of the Planet of the Apes].  That was exceptional.”

TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-movie-live-actionI think this is a great way to go, and if Liebesman can bring Weta Digital in to create photorealistic turtles then I think we’ll be in for a visually stunning TMNT. The director also stressed that the film won’t be entirely about action:

“We’re definitely into the action, but for me what’s more important than that is that it’s a story about brotherhood and friendship and responsibility.  Right now, I’m with the characters because those are what attracted me to the movie.  They’re the best characters I’ll have had a chance to deal with.”

Liebesman also revealed that they’ll probably be shooting later this year (“September, or something”) and they’re thinking about shooting in Canada. I’m not necessarily a die-hard TMNT fan, but I think I can live with the fact that the ooze in the reboot comes from an “alien race.” Having the turtles themselves be aliens would be pushing it, but if Liebesman’s comments are to be taken to heart then I think fans will be alright in the end.

Here’s the portion of Steve’s interview on TMNT.  Look for the full interview next week and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Stanley Tucci in Talks to Star Opposite Emma Watson in YOUR VOICE IN MY HEAD

stanley-tucci-your-voice-in-my-head

Coming off a dazzling turn in The Hunger Games, Stanely Tucci is gearing up to show off his dramatic chops in director David Yates’ follow-up to four Harry Potter films. Variety reports that Tucci is in talks to star opposite Harry Potter alum Emma Watson in the adaptation of Emma Forrest’s memoir, Your Voice in My Head. Watson stars as Forrest, a young girl who attempts suicide after a bad breakup, only to be saved by a terminally ill psychiatrist. Tucci would play the psychiatrist if he signs on. We had previously heard that the psychiatrist role caught the eye of a number of high profile actors, including George Clooney and Tom Hanks, but apparently Yates decided to go with Tucci in the end. Hit the jump for more.

stanely-tucci-imageI think Tucci’s an incredible talent, and I’m enthused that Yates has settled on him to take the coveted role. The director did a swell job bringing the Harry Potter series to a close with nuance and grace, and I’m eager to see him tackle this smaller, dramatic pic. Variety’s report notes that the film doesn’t yet have a greenlight, but Tucci’s involvement should move things along. Apparently Warner Bros. is so high on the project that they’re already eyeing it as a major contender in the 2013 Oscar race, especially the Best Actor category. A little premature, but I’m encouraged by their enthusiasm nonetheless. “The Tucc” is long overdue.

Here’s the synopsis for Your Voice in My Head:

Emma Forrest, a British journalist, was just twenty-two and living the fast life in New York City when she realized that her quirks had gone beyond eccentricity. In a cycle of loneliness, damaging relationships, and destructive behavior, she found herself in the chair of a slim, balding, and effortlessly optimistic psychiatrist—a man whose wisdom and humanity would wrench her from the dangerous tide after she tried to end her life. She was on the brink of drowning, but she was still working, still exploring, still writing, and she had also fallen deeply in love. One day, when Emma called to make an appointment with her psychiatrist, she found no one there. He had died, shockingly, at the age of fifty-three, leaving behind a young family. Reeling from the premature death of a man who had become her anchor after she turned up on his doorstep, she was adrift. And when her all-consuming romantic relationship also fell apart, Emma was forced to cling to the page for survival and regain her footing on her own terms.

A modern-day fairy tale, Your Voice in My Head is a stunning memoir, clear-eyed and shot through with wit. In her unique voice, Emma Forrest explores the highs and lows of love and the heartbreak of loss. [Amazon]

New Grisly Image of Ryan Gosling from Nicolas Winding Refn’s ONLY GOD FORGIVES

ryan-gosling-only-god-forgives

First of all, no, that is not the new image of Ryan Gosling from Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives. But hold on! We’ve kept the new image after the jump since it’s a little spoiler-y. The above image is the first one we brought to you in February and trust me when I say that Gosling looks much worse off in the new shot. It only makes sense, since the violence of Only God Forgives has been reported to surpass that of Gosling and Refn’s previous collaboration, Drive. In this film, Gosling plays Julian, the owner of a Thai boxing club that has strong connections within the criminal underworld. The film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) as Gosling’s mob-boss mother. Hit the jump to see the new image and read up on the official synopsis of Only God Forgives.

Here’s the official synopsis for Only God Forgives (also a touch SPOILER-Y for my tastes:

Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.

When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.

Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.

Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Ladies, look away. Here’s the new shot of Gosling (via Yahoo):

Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER Dated for October 12; Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill to Debut Untitled Comedy in June 2013

seth-rogen-jonah-hill

The release dates for two films from filmmakers that you really like were announced tonight:

The Weinstein Company will release Paul Thomas Anderson‘s religious drama The Master starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman on October 12, 2012Sony will release a comedy from Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill on June 14, 2013; it is currently listed as untitled, but may be the project we know as The Apocalypse, or perhaps Sausage Party

Hit the jump for more on each project.

paul thomas anderson the masterNot so long ago, The Master was “postponed indefinitely.”  Then the ineffable Megan Ellison (True Grit) rescued the project and earlier this month promised an October release date on Twitter.  Box Office Mojo narrows down the time window to October 12, which may now be the official date that Oscar season starts. Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky co-star in the drama about a man (Hoffman) so shaken by the horrors of World War II that he creates a new religion.  Anderson shot The Master in 65mm; There Will Be Blood composer Johnny Greenwood is scoring the film.

Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse started off as a trailer (embedded below) and turned into Rogen’s directorial debut with the truncated title, The Apocalypse.  Since Rogen and Hill are both attached to The Apocalypse and it’s housed at Sony, that’s my best guess.  But it could also be the hard R animation spoof Sausage Party, or something we haven’t heard about yet.  If it’s The Apocalypse, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson star alongside Hill and Rogen set in the end of days.  The trailer should give you an idea.

If it’s Sausage Party, this is how Rogen’s writing partner Evan Goldberg described the story:

“It’s our secret project.  Me and Seth and Jonah Hill came up with it one day.  Me and Seth and Conrad Vernon—who did Shrek 2 and Monsters and Aliens—are going to produce it, and me and Seth and our writing cohorts Ariel and Kyle, who are buddies from Canada who we brought down to work with us, are going to write it.  It’s about Jonah and Seth, playing the two main characters, they’re sausages in a supermarket, and it’s a hard R mockery of a Pixar movie, where they get taken across the store in a cart, and fall out of the cart, and they need to get back to their aisle before the fourth of July sale, so they can reach every sausages goal of being purchased and carried to the heavens by the humans.”

If it’s something we haven’t heard of yet, you’re on your own.

Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase Are Writing a New Comedy Script

dan-aykroyd-chevy-chase-slice

As Ghostbusters 3 is looking less and less likely with each new non-update from Dan Aykroyd, the actor/screenwriter has announced that he’s now getting to work on a new comedy with fellow Saturday Night Live alum Chevy Chase. No plot details were given, but Aykroyd said that he’s beginning to start work on a script concept for a comedy movie with Chase. Aykroyd hasn’t had a script produced since 1998’s Blues Brothers 2000 (yeah, that movie actually happened) and Chase’s last writing credit was the short-lived The Chevy Chase Show in 1993, but apparently the two have an idea for a new comedy that they’d like to see come to fruition. Hit the jump for more.

dan-aykroyd-chevy-chaseAykroyd made the announcement on his Facebook page:

“Chevy (Chase) and I are about to start work on a script concept for a comedy movie. Cannot say too much about the concept, but the joy of working with him again is one that I am extremely excited about. Chevy is one of my favourite people, and one of the great anarchistic and physically committed comedians in the business.”

This news might have been exciting 25 years ago, but Chase is consistently the weakest link on NBC’s Community. Furthermore, he recently revealed to Steve that he was working on his own Vacation script with co-star Beverly DeAngelo to counter the studio’s reboot of the franchise, and lets just say his plot idea for the Griswolds isn’t the sharpest. As for Aykroyd, I think he’s actually still quite funny, but his scripts generally leave something to be desired. There’s no guarantee that the script by Aykroyd and Chase will even get to a studio, let alone production, but at this point it appears they’re intent on working through the concept.

Maggie Grace talks LOCKOUT, Working With Luc Besson and Guy Pearce, DECODING ANNIE PARKER and More at WonderCon 2012

Maggie-Grace-lockout-interview-slice

At this weekend’s WonderCon, I was able to sit down with Maggie Grace (Lost) for an extended interview.  The reason she was attending the con was to promote Luc Besson‘s high-octane outer space thriller Lockout that also stars Guy Pearce.   In the film, Pearce plays Snow, a man wrongly accused of conspiracy to commit espionage. His one chance at a pardon comes when he is tasked with rescuing the president’s daughter from a maximum security outer space prison facility when the inmates take control.  Lockout is the feature directorial debut of James Mather and Stephen St. Leger and it opens April 13th.  For more on the film, here’s a five minute clip and our recap of the WonderCon panel.

During my interview with Grace, we talked about how she got cast, how Lockout is more of a throwback sci-fi movie, what it’s like to work for Luc Besson and with Guy Pearce, if it was more fun playing Liam Neeson‘s daughter in Taken or the President’s daughter in Lockout, and more.  In addition, Grace talks about Decoding Annie Parker (which comes out later this year) and how she’s currently filming something in Atlanta but can’t reveal what it is yet.  Hit the jump to watch.

Casting Call: Clark Duke and Ken Howard Join Comedy A.C.O.D.; Anthony Head Replaces Pierce Brosnan in PERCY JACKSON Sequel

clark-duke-ken-howard-anthony-head-slice

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share with you this evening. First up, Clark Duke (Kick-Ass) and SAG President (and frequent 30 Rock guest) Ken Howard are the latest to join the comedy A.C.O.D. The title stands for “Adult Children of Divorce”, and the plot centers on a guy (Adam Scott) who has been caught in his parents’ ugly divorce of the past twenty years, and matters become even worse when his brother gets engaged.  Then the details of the feud are revealed in a definitive new book on children of divorce.

The already stellar ensemble cast includes Scott, Amy Poehler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jane Lynch, Jessica Alba, Catherine O’Hara and Richard Jenkins. Variety reports that Howard will play Scott’s amicable stepfather and Duke will play Scott’s younger brother whose engagement forces the parents to meet once again. Duke is incredibly funny and Howard brings down the house on 30 Rock, so the two are very much welcome additions to an incredibly exciting project. Hit the jump for casting news concerning the next Percy Jackson film.

percy-jackson-the-olympians-sea-of-monsters-book-coverAdditionally, producers are recasting yet another role for the sequel to Percy Jackson & The Olmpians: The Lightening Thief. We recently learned that Nathan Fillion will be taking over the role of Hermes in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, and now Heat Vision reports that Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has been tapped to play Chrion in follow-up. The centaur part was filled by Pierce Brosnan in the first film, but for unspecified reasons Head will be stepping in this time around. Thor Freudenthal is directing the pic, which sees the return of Logan Lerman as the titular Percy. He embarks with his other demigod friends to the Island of the Cyclops (the Bermuda Triangle) in order to retrieve a Golden Fleece.

Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson are returning as well, with Lightening Thief director Chris Columbus set as producer. Other additions include Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mary Birdsong as the three fates. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters opens on March 27th, 2013.

On the riveting season finale of the ABC thriller The River, entitled “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” the Magus crew – including Lincoln (Joe Anderson), his mother Tess (Leslie Hope) and the long lost Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) – suddenly finds itself in complete chaos when a member of their own is shot dead, leading Jahel (Paulina Gaitán) to call upon the spirit of the Boíuna to help, against the wishes of her father (Daniel Zacapa). With a course now plotted for their final destination, the crew’s quest is threatened further by the unknown killer, as the situation continues to spiral out of control.

The last seven weeks of terrifying scares and shocking twists and turns have led up to this, and co-stars Joe Anderson and Leslie Hope spoke to Collider for this exclusive phone interview about how surprised they were about where things will end up for their characters, how much fun it was to actually get to act directly with Bruce Greenwood for the final episodes of the season, how many “Holy crap!” moments that fans can expect, there favorite moment of the season, how exhausting it was to play the constant terror, and the challenges of telling a story that relies on scares, when you have commercial breaks about every 15 minutes. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Collider: What can you say to tease fans about the season finale and where things will end up for each of your characters?

JOE ANDERSON: The focus is really on a father and son battle. Lincoln is definitely not who he usually is. Some head-to-heads could possibly happen as well, with the return of Emmet (Bruce Greenwood), and him coming back into this dynamic. It has potential to be quite an exciting episode.

LESLIE HOPE: It’s also the episode I feel like the writers really wrassled with that classic idea of good versus evil, as exemplified through the characters. I think it’s classic real scary movie stuff, in our final episode. Just when you think things are all wrapped up, I think it can start all over again.

How much fun was it for both of you to have Bruce Greenwood actually there and get to act with him, for the finale?

HOPE: Both as a character and as an actor, I was so happy to see Bruce Greenwood. I’ve been bossing people around for seven episodes. Finally getting Bruce around, I could completely take a break, which I loved. That being said, it was a shift in the dynamic to, all of a sudden, have dad on the set with us. I love Bruce, personally. I’ve known him for 20-something years. He’s a great friend of mine and a real ally, and I loved actually being able to finale share a set with him.

ANDERSON: It was interesting for me, with the estranged son and a guy who’s not on set very often. It was perfect when he turned up because that was it. We saw glimpses of Bruce ‘cause he’d come in and film bits and pieces while we were mainly shooting on the boat. So, it worked out perfectly for me to not have him around every day, and then there he is and you’re dealing with that new animal and that new dynamic. It helped.

How many “Holy crap!” moments would you say there are in the finale?

HOPE: Well, I would say about five.

How surprised were you guys, by the ending of this season and the outcome for your character? Could you see where it was going, or were you just completely taken by surprise?

ANDERSON: I was pretty taken by surprise, to be honest. I thought it was a very bold move, actually, to do what they did and to also end the episode the way that they do. I thought it was an incredibly interesting and bold move. So, I was really excited when I read it, straight off the top.

HOPE: The thing that I really loved about doing this show is that we’ve done eight episodes and each one was a big swing. There was nothing timid about the show. Whether or not it’s ultimately successful, or however many millions of people watch it or not, I always felt that at least we were trying really hard, and there was nothing casual about that effort. At this point in my life, that’s what I’m interested in doing and that’s the kind of shows that I want to be involved in.

Did you each have a favorite moment of the season, or something you got to do that you really enjoyed?

ANDERSON: Yeah, I got my hair cut. That was amazing for me ‘cause I could finally see. I couldn’t see Hawaii before. That was pretty cool. Actually, not to give it away, but what happens in this final episode, there’s a little stunt that I had to do that was pretty exciting. I think it was actually the last thing we shot for the show. But, it challenged me and definitely made me nervous, so it was exciting.

HOPE: For me, it was really the true relief when Emmet is there, for real. That was the end of the previous episode. Despite all the harrowing things that Tess goes through in this finale, particularly in relation to Lincoln, I was so pleased to have Bruce there with me. For me, that was my favorite part. To have to slog through those seven episodes, and then have my old friend that, who I had known before, was great. In my real life, I was away from my husband, shooting this show, and I was lonely for my real-life son, and there was something very comforting for me, to have Bruce there with me, in the end.

As you got deeper into this series and got to see where things were going and what would be happening with your characters, was there a storyline that you were most anxious to see the resolution to?

ANDERSON: For Lincoln, it was a pretty linear thing. He quit med school and came out on this adventure. He and his mom are essentially on the same journey, and until he found his dad, or found out that his dad was dead, it was very much a one-track thing. And then, you throw Lena (Eloise Mumford) into the mix and there’s unresolved issues there, but there wasn’t that much time to explore that. So, for Lincoln, it was a fairly straight arc and journey, I would say.

HOPE: For me, I’m interested in all the different triangles that the writers set up. In some ways, there’s a triangle between Tess and Lincoln and Emmet, and the unresolved issues there, as a family. There’s an interesting triangle between Tess and Clark (Paul Blackthorne) and Emmet, and of course, the motivation is to get Emmet. I think what’s going to be interesting, should we have a second season, is what’s left of that triangulation between Clark and Emmet and Tess. The truth of the matter is that those two are best friends in the show, so what will that do to their relationship, now that everything is going to come out in the wash.

How exhausting was it to do something like this, where you constantly have to over-exaggerate the terror, so that it comes across for the viewers at home? Did you just feel completely exhausted, at the end of each day?

HOPE: I did.

ANDERSON: Yeah, it was exhausting and it’s a challenge to try to keep it fresh and, as an actor, try to keep it so that you don’t just have one scared look. You have to be different, every time. And, of course, it’s a scary show, so you’re coming up against that, all the time. It was quite challenging for us to keep that fresh. But then, we were right there, in the jungle, in the building and on the boat, where there is weird stuff happening. We shoot in digital, so it is dark on the boat and it is eerie and it is wet on the floor. It all adds to it. Other than being tired, it was fun to immerse yourself in the whole thing.

HOPE: I agree.

ANDERSON: So, it was a good time and a satisfying time.

The River ABC cast imageWere you ever worried that it would be difficult to sustain the level of terror and scares, when you have to go to commercial break, or do you think the viewers need that moment to take a breath?

HOPE: I think it’s hard to sustain when you go to commercial break. I think what works better with commercial breaks, frankly, are those scares that come out at you, like the skinned monkey or the “Boo!” scares. The scares that are harder to sustain when you go to commercial break are the ones that are more psychological scares or out of the corner of your eye, where you don’t want anything to relent or give you a break. You know, my son watches everything on iTunes or Hulu, so he’s having a different experience than watching it on the television. How the show is watched is an interesting problem for them to tackle. I saw the first four episodes at a screening without any break at all, with the lights out, and I thought it was fantastic. I think it’s a different thing to sustain that in a living room with an add coming in, every 15 minutes, to sell you a car. No offense to whoever is selling cars on our show.

The season finale of The River airs on Tuesday, March 20th on ABC. You can learn more about the show at www.abc.com/shows/the-river.

Almost 40 New Images from John Cusack’s THE RAVEN

john-cusack-the-raven-slice

The Raven has the unenviable task of drawing audience’s attention (and dollars) away from this year’s slate of big action movies. Luckily for the Gothic murder mystery inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, April looks to be one of the weaker months for this year’s box office. However, it will only have about one week to rake in the cash until a little movie called The Avengers comes out. Until then, we have a host of new images from The Raven featuring John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans, Bredan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen in various shades of Gothic black. The James McTeigue thriller opens April 27th. Hit the jump to see the images.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Raven. The images follow below.

In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster). When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Shocking News: THE HUNGER GAMES Makes a Ton of Money at Midnight Screenings

hunger-games-teaser-poster-slice-01

The world’s shortest odds were in favor of The Hunger Games‘ box office.  Last night, the film played in over 2,500 sold-out midnight showings, and late shows were added to accommodate the demand of Hungry Gamers (I don’t know the fan-base’s nickname).  According to THR, the film grossed $19.7 million from midnight screenings, which is the most of any non-sequel film.  It’s also the seventh best midnight gross of all-time.  That total beats out the $17 million The Dark Knight and Revenge of the Sith.  The record holder for highest midnight gross is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.  Box office prognosticators are predicting that The Hunger Games could earn over $130 million domestically this weekend.  The movie is currently in 4,137 theaters nationwide, including IMAX screens.  Click here for our many Hunger Games interviews.

This is fun for record books and Lionsgate stockholders, but that’s about it.  The sequel, Catching Fire, is already in the works and set to dominate next year’s Thanksgiving weekend on November 22, 2013.

Olivia Wilde Returning for HOUSE Series Finale; Thomas Lennon Joins NEW GIRL Season Finale

house-olivia-wilde-new-girl-thomas-lennon

It’s the end of March, which in TV Land means it’s time to start planning for the season finales that will air in May.  We wanted to pass along a pair of notable finale castings over at Fox.  First, TV Line reports that Olivia Wilde will return for the House series finale.  Wilde left the cast last season to capitalize on her budding movie career.  But since she played Thirteen for 80 episodes on the medical drama, so social courtesy dictates she returns for the very last episode.  Even amid the lulls, House has always been great with “event” episodes, so I am excited to see how the writers sign off after 8 seasons (presumably with a bang).  As a fan of Wilde and the character, I’m glad she will be involved.  Creator David Shore and longtime House writers are currently working on the swan song, which will air on May 21.

Hit the jump for details on Thomas Lennon‘s role in New Girl.

new-girl-fox-castAccording to The Live Feed, Mary Elizabeth Ellis will reprise her role as Caroline, the manipulative ex-girlfriend of Nick (Jake Johnson) in the final three episodes of the first season.  Nick considers moving in with Caroline, which would open up a room in the apartment.  Jess (Zooey Deschanel), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris) start looking for possible replacements—Lennon will guest star as one of the candidates.  The season finale will air on May 8, cementing the first unqualified hit sitcom Fox has premiered in quite some time.

In addition to Ellis and Lennon, Justin Long will return in the penultimate episode, reprising his role as Jess’ similarly awkward romantic interest.

Emma Stone and Marc Webb Talk THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, Honoring the Marvel Icon, and Why Andrew Garfield is the Perfect Spider-Man

With its July 3rd release date quickly approaching, it wasn’t a surprise that The Amazing Spider-Man had a panel presentation at WonderCon 2012 with actress Emma Stone (aka Gwen Stacy) and director Marc Webb. This gritty and grounded take on Peter Parker’s origin story and evolution into Spider-Man is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of the summer.

Prior to their panel presentation (read Dave’s recap here), Emma Stone and Marc Webb talked to the press about the idea that Spider-Man is bigger than any one person, honoring the iconography of the story and character while still making it their own movie, living up to fan expectations, what they’re hoping to explore with the relationship between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy, why they decided to return to the origin story, and what made Andrew Garfield the perfect Spider-Man. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

amazing-spider-man-image-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-14Collider: Are you getting a sense of the excitement for the film, now that little pieces have gotten out?

Marc Webb: Yeah, it’s intimidating. There’s something liberating about the idea that Spider-Man is so much bigger than any one of us.

Emma Stone: Yes, absolutely! You feel like a little cog in a really big machine, which is so nice. It makes it a little bit more pressure-less. For me, it feels like they’re coming to see Spider-Man. That’s what it’s all about.

Webb: But, it’s been really fun. I think there’s a real genuine sense of enthusiasm and curiosity, which is fun. You do have to honor the iconographic elements of Spider-Man, but it’s been fun to put ourselves in it, in a different and new way.

andrew-garfrield-the-amazing-spider-man-imageHow do you honor that iconography, but also make it your own movie?

Webb: Well, I think there are elements of Spider-Man that are just universal. He shoots webs and he soars through the sky and he’s a little guy who beats up guys that are bigger than him. He fights for the little guy. I think that’s a really important thing. For me, there were a few things in the Spider-Man comics that I thought were really interesting. There’s this story about Peter’s parents and where he came from, and I thought that it was really interesting to explore the emotional consequence of someone whose parents had left them, at a very young age. I like that this Peter Parker has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. In The Amazing Spider-Man #8, there’s this moment where Flash and Peter are going at each other. They’re at a boxing match, and you hear what Peter is saying and he’s a little surly, and I like that. There’s this attitude that’s a punk rock humor and trickster quality that probably comes from somebody who is a little distrustful of the world, at times. In order for someone like that to become a hero, I think it’s a really interesting story, and that was something that was really fun to explore. And then, of course, there’s the Gwen Stacy saga and The Lizard. What we tried to do was find something very emotionally grounded, and that felt very real. That’s a challenge, when there’s big lizards and soaring through the air, but that’s what was really fun about it.

Emma, what was fun for you, in regard to showing up for work, every day?

emma-stone-the-amazing-spider-man-imageStone: Well, there were fun elements, like swinging, that I’d never done, or reacting to something that’s not there, which was interesting. But, the greatest take-away was realizing that everything is so grounded in reality. It doesn’t matter how big the world is around you, or the blue screens in the background. You are doing a scene between two people, and it’s human and it’s real. That’s a comforting thing, when you’re in something that’s so seemingly daunting and it’s such a big environment. It’s nice, at the end of the day, to know that you’re just acting as you would be, in any circumstance.

Does seeing how hard-core these fans are about the comic make you nervous at all, in living up to that expectation?

Stone: Initially, definitely, but then you realize that there’s just so much material when it comes to Spider-Man. I had done The Help right before this, and that was a book, so there was also that fan base. But, that’s one book, and this is 50 years worth of comic book material. There are different incarnations of Gwen, and I realized that you can’t please everybody, and that you were cast because they’re hoping that you can bring this character to life, in the best way that you know how. So, at the end of the day, I hope that people are satisfied. I know that not everybody will be, and that’s one of those trials of being human, when you learn that not everybody can like you. It is a tough lesson, isn’t it? But, it’s important, and I think that people will be okay with my incarnation.

We haven’t seen much about Gwen Stacy, outside of the comics. What are you hoping to explore with this relationship?

Webb: Well, I think that Peter Parker eventually learns about sacrifice through Gwen Stacy. But, in order to adequately learn that lesson, you have to feel that really strong bond. In terms of what we set out to do with this relationship, specifically between Peter and Gwen, the first time that you meet a girl in high school, and you get to share things with that person that you might not have shared with any other people, that creates a bond and an intensity that has a lot of currency. When you get that opportunity to be honest and open with somebody, for the first time, and share things about yourself that you haven’t been able to share before, that you might be scared of or ashamed about, that’s really exhilarating, and I think that’s something that people will really identify with. That was something that was fun about the relationship. And then, in terms of Gwen as a character, she’s really smart. She’s got this scientific quality. But, she’s in a weird position, stuck between the different men in her life.

denis-leary-the-amazing-spider-man-imageStone: Yeah, there’s her duty to her father and her duty to her boyfriend because she’s a real confidante for him. Their intimacy is such an incredible element. Gwen has been in control her whole life. She’s the oldest daughter of a police chief, who is constantly terrified that her father is going to die, every day. She has to have an element of being smart because she has to be. She’s a valedictorian because she has to be. She has to take care of things and be responsible for her family. She has to try to let go and trust somebody else who puts themselves in the face of death, every day. It’s like, “Great, now she’s drawn to another person that could die, at any moment, and she has to keep his secret, and pick and choose between her first love, which is her father, like every girl.” That’s the first man in your life, and then there’s your first boyfriend. So, it’s a pretty complex situation for Gwen. There’s a lot of sadness and fear in her life, combined with the fact that she’s outwardly confident and strong and smart, and takes no bullshit. She’s soft and 17, underneath it all.

Webb: There’s a great source of drama, and Gwen is at the center of it, in a lot of ways. There are competing ideas of what’s good. Everybody’s heart is in the right place, but they execute their plans in different ways, and that goes for The Lizard and Curt Connors, as well. Gwen, in particular, is stuck between The Captain and Peter Parker and Spider-Man, who have different ways of going about finding justice in their lives. I think that’s a really fun thing to explore in the movie.

amazing-spider-man-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-hi-res-02With the romance being so important in the story, how quickly did you see the chemistry happening between Emma and Andrew [Garfield]? Did that happen right away?

Webb: I know that, when we did a screen test, what was great was that Emma brought a level of humor and levity that Andrew really responded to, and there was this immediate sense of lightness in the interaction, which I think tracks really beautifully on screen. When you have that, you just want to spend time with them. There was a spontaneity on set. You could tell that Emma had done a lot of improv because they were just firing it off, and that was really cool. We had this very big, huge movie with a lot of visual effects and a lot of pressure and a lot of days, and then you have these wistful spirits who are just snappy. That was a real joy to watch.

With 50 years worth of Spider-Man to draw from, why go back and explore this origin story again, so soon?

amazing-spider-man-image-andrew-garfield-emma-stone-11Webb: Well, we’re telling the story in a different way. I think it’s really important, when you’re redefining a character, for the audience to experience things that they haven’t experienced, from the ground up. I wanted to build a character. I feel like point of view is a really crucial thing in the story, and that you need to build up the emotional building blocks, so that you can experience all the other emotions in a very specific way, rather than just experiencing it in an intellectual way. That’s why, at the beginning of the movie, there’s the story of his parents being pulled from him. You want to feel what that sense of abandonment, as an audience member, so that you can readily and appropriately identify. We’re creating a different universe with different rules and a different tone and different villains. We were very careful to honor the iconography of Spider-Man, but we wanted to tell it in a new and different way.

Emma, what was your first exposure to Spider-Man?

amazing-spider-man-image-emma-stone-28Stone: The Sam Raimi trilogy. I didn’t read comics, growing up. I watched a lot of movies, and those were my comic books. So, it was the trilogy. And then, my exposure really increased by becoming affiliated with Spider-Man. When I found out that I was going to audition for Gwen, I looked into the Gwen Stacy story. I was so excited that it was Gwen because, when your exposure has been the Sam Raimi trilogy, you only really knew about Mary Jane, other than Bryce Dallas Howard’s portrayal in the third movie, but that’s a totally different version of Gwen. So, it was like I had some backstory, all of a sudden, to the Peter and Mary Jane relationship. He’s gone through something so horribly traumatic in his life and has such a sense of guilt that it really added so much to the story. So, I was so excited to get to be a part of bringing that story to life.

Marc, why was Andrew Garfield the perfect Spider-Man?

amazing-spider-man-movie-image-andrew-garfieldWebb: We looked at a lot of people, and then we started casting and there was something about him. I remember that there was a very specific moment, when we were screen testing with Andrew. He was eating a cheeseburger that wasn’t really in the movie. It was just for the screen test. And he moved in a way that felt adolescent. He was eating a cheeseburger and he flopped his elbows around, and I didn’t know what I was drawn to, initially. I just watched it over and over again. I couldn’t stop watching it. I thought that it was so interesting, and there were so many layers in the performance, and I was drawn to it. I just wanted to watch it, over and over again. Beyond that, he’s emphatic about finding authenticity and emotional reality in a scene, and he will not reach for jokes. He will not reach for any kind of emotion that does not feel real or authentic. That’s an enormous gift. It’s a very difficult thing for actors because they’re often asked to do things that are really crazy. When you have to react to a lizard that’s a tennis ball, it’s a really, really difficult, tricky piece of craft. He could do that in a way that felt real, and I felt that was really exceptional. Beyond that, he can do emotional depth and heartbreaking scenes. There’s a lot of tragedy in the movie. He can do romance and he can do humor, as can Emma, but that’s a very, very rare combination to find, in an actor. You become increasingly aware of how rare that is, as you start to try to find that. He’s an exceptional human and an exceptional craftsman, in that regard.

Why was it important for you to restore the smart-ass element of peter Parker?

amazing-spider-man-emma-stone-andrew-garfieldWebb: I think it emerges from a kind of attitude. There’s a punk rock quality to Peter Parker, that I identified with when I read the comics, and that I really liked. He has this chip on his shoulder. That humor is something that’s so crucial and so part of the DNA of Spider-Man and the comics. I liked a little bit of that wise-ass quality, and Andrew really took a shine to it and was able to pull it off. He hadn’t done a lot of funny movies before this, but he can be very wistful.

Is Gwen also funny?

Stone: I’m sure some stuff snuck in there. The nice thing is that Gwen’s story is really through Peter Parker. You very rarely see her outside of him. And in a relationship that’s a first relationship, there’s levity and there’s heartbreak. Of course, there are funny moments, and he really has a pretty incredible, hilarious sequence. It’s pretty fantastic.

Webb: He’s great. It’s very good. He does this sort of physical comedy really well.

Stone: Yeah, he’s great at physical comedy.

Webb: You don’t see that very often. There’s no vaudeville to train that kind of thing.

Stone: Yeah, but he took clowning in school.
