New Images from Rian Johnson’s Sci-Fi Thriller LOOPER Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt

We’ve got more sci-fi goodness to share on this fine WonderCon Saturday. Director Rian Johnson premiered the trailer for his new sci-fi film Looper at the film’s panel earlier today, and while the rest of us will have to wait a little while to get a peek at the film in motion, a couple new images have gone online to tide us over. The futuristic thriller takes place in a world where time travel exists, but is only used on the Black Market. When the mob wants to kill someone, they send the target 30 years into the past where a contract killer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) does the dirty work. Things are going smoothly until Gordon-Levitt’s future self (Bruce Willis) is sent into the past to be killed. These images show off the subtle makeup used to make Gordon-Levitt resemble Willis, and I’m very impressed. Johnson’s previous films—the noir drama Brick and the quirky con man story The Brothers Bloom—are splendid, and I can’t wait to see him take on the sci-fi genre.

Here’s the synopsis for Looper:

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Five minutes from the upcoming sci-fi actioner film Lockout have gone online. The footage is the same clip that was shown earlier today at WonderCon, and highlights a scene involving Guy Pearce‘s character breaking into a space prison. Pearce plays a wrongly-accused spy who must rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from the orbiting prison. Produced by Luc Besson, the film looks like a sufficiently fun thriller buoyed by Pearce’s wise-cracking lead character. Though the domestic trailers are all action, the international trailers highlight the charisma of Pearce and the fun rapport he has with Grace’s character. This clip shows more of Pearce’s appealing work, which leads me to believe that Lockout is much more than space explosions.

Chloe Moretz and Rupert Grint to Join Dennis Wilson Biopic, THE DRUMMER Starring Aaron Eckhart

Chloe Moretz and Rupert Grint have signed on to join Aaron Eckhart and Vera Farmiga in the The Drummer.  Director Randy Miller‘s indie music biopic focuses on the last six years life of Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson (played by Eckhart).  As we reported in January, Farmiga will play Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter Christine McVie, who sparked a passionate and tumultuous relationship before Wilson’s death in 1983.  According to Variety, Moretz will play Wilson’s daughter Jennifer, and Grint has been cast as “Stan Shapiro, a mail room intern at the talent agency William Morris, who befriended Wilson during the last few years of the musician’s life.”  Jennifer Wilson is co-producing the film along with her half-brother Carl.

Filming is set to begin June 15th.  Moretz will next be seen in Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows.  The Drummer will be Grint’s first major role since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

3 Clips from JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME Starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms

From writers/directors Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus) comes Jeff Who Lives at Home, a coming of age comedy for two men who are already well beyond their youth.  Starring Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) as two brothers, with Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) as their mother, Jeff Who Lives at Home follows Jeff (Segel) as he searches for meaning in his life and inadvertently helps his brother, Pat (Helms) discover a truth of his own. We have three clips from the film that highlight the very funny rapport between Helms and his onscreen wife Judy Greer, a fairly awkward phone conversation between Segel and Sarandon, and the giant Segel uncomfortably riding in a tiny Porche. I was already pretty sold on the dramatic stuff from the trailers, but these clips focus on the lighter side of things and the jokes land solidly, so hopefully that carries over through the entirety of the movie.
