PROMETHEUS Viral Continues with Android-Unboxing Video from Weyland Corp Featuring Michael Fassbender

prometheus-viral-video-slice

The viral campaign for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated return to sci-fi, Prometheus, kicked off in a big way with a chilling TED Talk video featuring Guy Pearce’s character from the film. During the pic’s WonderCon panel earlier today, fans were given cards from Weyland Corp that directed them to a website and a phone number. If you call the number, an operator informs you that all Weyland Corp lines are busy, but calls your attention to a text message you’ve just received. The text message gives you a link that directs you to a truly spectacular video narrated by one of the film’s stars. Meet me after the jump to check out the video, talk about it in more detail, and to get a look at the card. If you’d rather be kept in the dark concerning certain plot points for Prometheus (albeit that are being revealed by the studio), I’d advise you to turn back now.

Still with me? Alright. Scott himself previously revealed that Michael Fassbender plays an android in the Alien-connected Prometheus, and this viral video is narrated by Fassbender and shows the unboxing of his human-like android. It’s extremely well done and I nearly got chills as the video concluded. It’s a short video, but the viral campaign for Prometheus thus far has been kicking some serious ass (your move, Dark Knight Rises).

The text message directs you to this website, from which the video originates. Steve snapped some photos of the business card handed out at WonderCon, which you can see below. Be sure to check back later for our full report from the film’s WonderCon panel, and if you missed it take a gander at the film’s new IMAX trailer and a fan Q&A with Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

New IMAX Trailer for PROMETHEUS

PROMETHEUS-monolith-slice

In keeping with today’s unofficial “Prometheus Day” theme, a new IMAX trailer for director Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi film has gone online. A fan Q&A with Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron is already up, the film’s WonderCon panel with Scott and screenwriter Damon Lindelof takes place later today, and tonight Scott and Lindelof will be debuting a new trailer (followed by a Q&A) at Downtown Disney. In short, there’s plenty of Prometheus goodness to go around on this fine Saturday.

The trailer features quite a bit of new footage, including a look at terror, the space jockey, quite a bit of action, and more terror. It still plays sort of like a teaser, which I’m happy with. The longer we can wait before the trailers give away the whole plot of the movie, the better. Noomi Rapace takes a prominent role here, and she appears to be more than just a normal astronaut or soldier-type. Be sure to check back here later today for our full report from the film’s WonderCon panel. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Guy Pearce. Prometheus opens in IMAX 3D on June 8th.

WonderCon 2012: PROMETHEUS Panel Recap Featuring Sir Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof

PROMETHEUS-monolith-slice

20th Century Fox showed up to WonderCon 2012 ready to unveil some footage for their heavy hitters this summer. The studio led off with director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, the loosely-tied prequel to that Alien franchise you may have heard about. We’ve already brought you the new trailer and the viral site featuring Michael Fassbender’s character, David. While they didn’t screen any additional footage beyond the trailer, Damon Lindelof was on hand to moderate a panel discussion that included Sir Ridley Scott, Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce. Prometheus opens in IMAX 3D on June 8th. Hit the jump for our recap on the panel discussion .

prometheus-charlize-theron-idris-elbaAfter Lindelof had his own special fan-boy moment in introducing Scott (after sharing a funny story about watching Alien for the first time as a kid), Scott talked for a moment about his return to sci-fi. He said it’s been too long since he’s done a sci-fi project because, frankly, nothing was of interest to him lately. He also mentioned that Prometheus came about as a genesis of a very small idea that hadn’t yet been examined and confirmed that he liked the idea of the film having the “DNA of Alien.” Scott also alluded to the possibility of a sequel or continuation of this film, saying that Prometheus has “enough big, open questions at the end.” After that comment, they debuted the new trailer for the audience. Since you can now simply watch it for yourself, I’ll continue to the panel discussion.

Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender both commented on the fact that Scott sent them the script and only gave them two hours to read it. Theron said hers would self-destruct while Fassbender confessed that there was a man standing beside him with a gun to his head (and admitted to being a slow reader).

prometheus-noomi-rapaceScott, always the straight man, pointed to two things for Prometheus’ success: the strength of the script and the strength of the ensemble cast. He also mentioned that he prefers working with an ensemble cast as they have better interactions on and off camera which results in better performances.

As previously mentioned [POSSIBLE SPOILER], Fassbender’s character is David, an android. He acts as a butler of sorts for the crew and for the ship itself. Fassbender said that he was inspired by the “funny walk and economy of movement” of Olympic diver, Greg Louganis for David’s movements. Regarding the character, he also wondered, “How much would a program program itself? Could it develop ego, insecurities, etc?”

In regards to shooting in 3D, Scott called the results “absolutely beautiful.” He made sure to give credit to “a very talented group of people” including his cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, production designer Arthur Max, costume design by Janty Yates and the entire special effects team. Scott also quipped that he is primarily concerned with the visual aesthetic and often forgets to talk to the actors on the first day.

prometheus-movie-posterSince special effects have evolved since Scott’s first Alien movie, he mentioned the fact that the first monster was played by the seven-footer, Bolaji Badejo. While computer effects allow the ability to do more, they’re still more expensive; however, Scott mentioned that the cost benefit to all the effects work is to do more films and that it would be a pleasure to come back to a sci-fi film as soon as possible.

The trailer, as you probably know by now, looks absolutely fantastic and I wish this film was coming out tomorrow. The cast is phenomenal, the visuals are stunning, the story has added dramatic weight to it already because we know its inevitable conclusion and the return of Scott behind the camera is just the icing on the cake.

Here’s the official synopsis for Prometheus:

Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.

Awesome New Trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

prometheus-movie-image-green-rapace-fassbender-slice

A new trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus has gone online, and it’s pretty damn great.  It succinctly tells you the story, and then provides what I really hope Scott has gone for: a blockbuster sci-fi horror film.  Today, sci-fi horror has to stick to a mid-range budget, but I’m loving the scope of what I’m seeing from this trailer.  However, the best part may be at the very end when Michael Fassbender‘s character, an android (click here for the viral video released earlier today), gives just the slightest vibe of Ash (Ian Holm) from Alien.  For those unfamiliar with the connection, Prometheus isn’t a direct sequel to Alien, but it has that film’s “DNA”.  When you see the trailer, the connection will be abundantly clear.

Hit the jump to check out the full trailer, and click here to see the IMAX version that was also release today.  Also be on the lookout for our coverage of the movie’s panel, which was held today at WonderCon in Anaheim, California.   The film also stars Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.  Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th.
